It was 30 November 2004. A consensus among 16 Filipino professionals have come together and determined the need for an alliance of health carers to create a positive image and provide direction and opportunities to the maturing health careers in Australia. Inspired by these objectives, PHCAA (Philippine Health Care Association of Australia) and PNAAust (Philippine Nurses Association – Australia) was born and the associations then would become the focal point of allied Filipino-Australian health carers. It was soon followed by an opportunity to provide free medical supplies and equipment (worth AU$35,000) to the Philippines. Soon after, 12 positions for the National Management Committee Officers (NMCO) were created to undertake the task of running the official activities of the association. NMCO’s were nominated and elected by their peers for a term of 2 years. The 16 founding directors and stakeholders established a set of guidelines, Mission and Vision, Goals and Objectives, including the Constitution and By-Laws to be used as the guiding principle.
PHCAA and PNAAust has been the leading Filipino-Australian not-for-profit organisation that is independent, non-partisan, non-political and non-religious organisation. Through private funding from businesses, PHCAA and PNAAust. were able to provide support and assistance to needy Filipinos in the Philippines and at the same time, nurturing and empowering these health carers in Australia through support and networking.
On the local settings, in co-ordination with local councils, our health carers and clinical educators regularly conduct free seminars and trainings to address, manage and prevent diabetes, stroke and cardiac heart attacks. PHCAA and PNAAust also provide free assistance and training to newly arrived Nurses on how they can better adjust and quickly assimilate to the working environment in Australia. In coordination with Australian Registered Training Organisations, PHCAA and PNAAust continue to encourage local health care workers in maximising their potentials by assisting them in furthering their education and experience through an efficient referral and endorsement system to employers.
Through the patronage of PHCAA and PNAAust and their business networks, various hospitals and clinics in the Philippines have become the recipient of medical supplies and equipment. PHCAA and PNAAust have been quick to respond and donate monies to earthquake, fire and flooding victims in various places in the Philippines.. PHCAA and PNAAust continue to strengthen its position by its collaboration with PNAA (Philippine Nurses Association of America), PNA (Philippines), PNA-Hawaii and PNA-UK.
PHCAA and PNAAust work effectively through the effectiveness and efficiency of its National Management Committee Officers (NMCO). PHCAA and PNAAust hold a once-a-year Annual AGM and Induction for its newly elected NMCO’s, including a Dinner & Formal Ball at a special affordable rate for their families, colleagues and friends.
Finally, as Filipinos and proud of its roots and heritage, we can never be thankful enough to our Fatherland, which made us for what we are now. It is in this spirit that we are strengthened and delighted to be of service to our adopted country, Australia, and to serve the community in need of care regardless of their political, cultural, ethnic, gender, social or religious orientation.
